Once again this year, IAABO Board 11 participated in the Officials Versus Cancer Event. This was a joint effort between IAABO, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), and the American Cancer Society during the "Coaches Versus Cancer" crusade. From Jan. 25 to Feb. 6, Board 11 officials used pink whistles for games with female competitors and white whistles for games with male competitors. Many officials will continue to make donations to the American Cancer Society and the Board will hold some more fundraisers as well.

2009 OFFICIALS VERSUS CANCER EVENTS, ARTICLES, AND MENTIONS
PLUS OTHER CANCER AWARENESS EVENTS
PENN PINK ZONE! On Tuesday, February 10, the William Penn Girls Basketball Team hosted Delcastle in a Varsity and Junior Varsity Doubleheader. However, this was not your typical Flight A showdown. It was a Pink Zone game! Pink Zone is a program organized by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Schools show their support for the fight against cancer by adorning their uniforms with something pink and donating money to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. William Penn and Delcastle players sported pink shoelaces and were allowed to wear pink headbands for the day. The coaches wore pink ribbons and clothing. Even the concession stand was involved as proceeds from the day were being donated. It was a wonderful event and the participating Board 11 officials were proud to sport their pink whistles for the contests. In addition, everyone in attendance recognized a moment of silence in honor of the late Coach Yow. A special thank goes out to Shirley Wintjen from William Penn for organizing such a wonderful event and to all participants for doing their part in the fight against cancer.
UA/St. E B+ PINK NIGHT! On Tuesday, February 17, Ursuline Academy hosted St. Elizabeth in a Varsity and Junior Varsity Doubleheader. The arch-rivals on the court came together for a good cause off the court. Players from both teams sported pink warm-up shirts provided by the McDonough Family and the B+ Foundation. All of the coaches wore pink shirts or pink ties and many players also wore pink shoelaces. It is great to see schools participating in these wonderful events, and we are pleased to recognize Ursuline and St. Elizabeth for joining together in the fight against cancer.
If you are an athletic director or coach and know that your school or team will be participating in a cancer awareness event, we would like to know. If you do not have one currently planned but would like to organize such an event, we would be happy to help in whatever way possible. Board 11 is proud to support any such efforts. As soon as we receive information from schools, it will be posted on this page. If you have any questions about Board 11's involvement in the Officials Versus Cancer Event, please contact our Board Secretary, Cynde Bimbi or our Recognition and Banquet Chair, Kelly Callahan.
Our hope is that together we can do our part to help find a cure for cancer. We thank you for your support of this endeavor.
