Jim Emerick Award
Last year, the Board instituted a new award in honor of the late Jim Emerick, a former official and true friend of Board 11 whose spirit for life never wavered.   The award was first presented at the 2008 banquet, and Kevin McGroerty was the inaugural recipient. The following is the inscription written on the Jim Emerick “TOSS” Award:

The Jim Emerick “TOSS” Award
presented to a member of IAABO Board 11 who is…
TIRELESS ... willing to do any game, any time, anywhere
OPTIMISTIC ... makes lemonade out of lemons
SINCERE ... a genuine friend and quality individual
SUPPORTIVE ... of Board 11, its members, the game of basketball
This award is given in memory of Jim Emerick, a former official and true friend of Board 11, whose spirit for life never wavered.

Theus winners of this award have been Kevin McGroerty (2008), Eileen Ford (2009), and Mark Moser (2010).

Board 11 Official of the Year:  Nominations for 2010 Now Open...  Three years ago, the DIOC, the officials group of the DIAA, began recognizing officials in all sports. It was decided that Board 11 would rotate with Board 129 for selecting the boys and girls officials of the year. Board 11’s first honoree was also then named the DIAA Boys Basketball Official of the Year for 2007. That honor went to Layne Drexel.  Our honoree for 2008, Kelly Callahan, was also named the 2008 DIAA Girls Basketball Official of the Year.  In 2009, our honoree was Jim Mahoney, named 2009 DIAA Boys Basketball Official of the Year.  Each summer, Board 11 must submit a name to be honored by DIAA the following year. Our honoree for this year will also be named as the DIAA Girls Basketball Official of the Year for 2010.  Nominations are now being accepted.

Board 11 Life Member: (Completed Nomination Form Required) When the new Board 11 Constitution and By-Laws were written, the Board Life Member honor was re-worded to better comply with IAABO International standards. This honor was something that was relatively neglected in the past, and we would like to bring it back. Here is the description of a Board Life Member as written in the Constitution:  “A Board Life member shall be elected by a majority vote of the Board, provided, they have served a minimum of twenty (20) years as an active member in good standing of the Board.”   Please note that this person needs to have been an active member of Board 11, not just IAABO, for at least 20 years. Upon retirement, he/shall will be forever considered a member of Board 11 as it is outlined in our Constitution.  This is a high honor, therefore a name may not be selected to present for Board approval in any given year. All nominees will be closely reviewed by the Committee.

How to Nominate Someone: (All info should be given to a Committee Member.)To submit a nomination for the Jim Emerick “TOSS” Award and the Board 11 Official of the Year Award, please provide a name and the reason why he/she is deserving of this award. The Committee will select the Emerick Award winner prior to the banquet. The Committee will also make a recommendation to the E-Board regarding nominees for Official of the Year. The E-Board will make the final selection for this honor.

To submit a name for the Board 11 Life Member, please complete the Board 11 Life Membership Nomination form and return to Britta Bimbi.  The Committee will review the nominations and ensure that they meet all requirements. After a Committee vote, the Committee may bring a name to the membership for approval.
