Boys Quarters Today at The Bob; Girls Semifinal Match-ups Set
Girls Tournament Updated Bracket (as of 3/7) Boys Tournament Updated Bracket (as of 3/8)
Girls: The 2010 semifinals will look like regional championships when they tip-off on Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. The first semifinal features two Henlopen teams when Smyrna will take on Cape Henlopen in the first game at 6:30pm. The second match-up has two upstate teams with a representative from the Independent Conference (Sanford) and one from the Catholic Conference (Ursuline). All four advanced after an exciting day of quarterfinal action on Saturday at the Bob.
The biggest story of the day happened in game 1 when the #9 seeded Vikings of Cape Henlopen pulled the upset over the #1 seed, the undefeated St. Mark's Spartans, 43-41. It was a back and forth contest and went right down to the wire. That left a lot of people wondering if more upsets would be in store. In the next game, seeds held true to form as Smyrna was victorious over Caesar Rodney after an outstanding second-half effort. The Eagles trailed by one at the half, but outscored the Riders 17-4 in the third to take the lead and never looked back.
In the bottom bracket, #2 Sanford jumped out to a 12-0 lead over #7 St. Elizabeth's. The Vikings picked up their play in the second quarter, but it wasn't enough to overtake the Warriors. Sanford played strong to the end and came out with a 54-40 victory. It wasn't until the final game of the night that another upset took place. The #3 seed Dover saw their season end for the second straight year at the hands of the Ursuline Raiders, this year's #6 seed. Ursuline had as much as a 20 point lead early in the fourth quarter, but the Senators fought back hard. They closed the gap to five late in the fourth quarter, but couldn't get any closer as the Raiders held on for the 63-54 win.
Boys: All but one of the top four seeds advanced to play in the 2010 semifinals when the quarters took place on Sunday. The #10 seed Tatnall was the one to crash the party and played their way into the semis in convincing fashion. They held the #2 seed Delcastle to only 41 points as the Hornets defense and offense both showed tremendous discipline. They moved on to play the winner of the day's first quarterfinal which took place between #3 Dover and #6 Red Lion. It was Red Lion's first trip to "The Bob," but the Senators start proved to be too much for the Lions. Dover came out firing and put up 25 points in the first quarter to take a 16 point lead after one. Red Lion kept the gap about there or lower for the rest of the game, but couldn't overcome that early deficit. The Senators and the Hornets will square off in the first semifinal at 6:30 Thursday night.
Teams in the top of the bracket were featured in the last two quarterfinals. #12 Smyrna, looking to pull off it's second straight upset, took an early lead. Concord came fighting back though and capped off a big second quarter run to take the halftime lead. From there, the Raiders never looked back and took a 55-42 win over the Eagles to advance them to the second semifinal on Thursday where they will face #1 Sanford. The Warriors were victorious in a big team effort over the speedy #8 seeded Newark Yellowjackets. Three players scored in double figures with one more just one point shy as the Warriors took a 59-51 victory over the Jackets.
It should be an outstanding week of basketball at the Bob starting Wednesday night with the girls semifinals. That begins a four day run of hoops action at the UD arena and we hope to see you there! Also, please check back for all the updates throughout the tourney right here on board11.org.
