Boys Tournament Updated Bracket  (as of 3/13)

For the first time in the history of Delaware high school basketball state tournaments, one school took home the boys and girls titles in the same year.  This historic sweep was accomplished by the Sanford Warriors.
Congratulations to all of the participants in the 2010 DIAA State Tournament and to Sanford on their outstanding achievement.

Girls:  If these Sanford players were nervous about playing in their first final, it sure didn't show on Friday night.  The Warriors came out in strong fashion early and took a 20-6 lead after the first quarter.  That early burst of energy proved too much for Smyrna to overcome as Sanford won the 2010 DIAA Girls' State Championship with a 51-36 victory in the final.  The Warriors were led by Naiesha Brown's 22 points and 15 rebounds as well as Andrea Hines' 12 points and 8 assists.

The key to the win could likely be found in Sanford's outstanding defense.  Smyrna had some trouble getting their star Betnijah Laney involved in the offense early because of Sanford's pressure.  Early in the third quarter though, Laney found some rhythm and tried to bring the Eagles back.  She finished the night with 15 points and 9 rebounds to lead Smyrna.  Both teams have their key players back next season as they will try to make a run for the 2011 title.

Boys:  Sanford boys basketball has often been known for its team approach.  That continued tonight as the Warriors took the state title with a 56-45 win over Dover.  The Senators took the early lead with a 12-5 margin after one quarter, but the Warriors came back in the second to outscore Dover 15-6 and went to the locker room with a 20-18 advantage.  In the third quarter, Sanford came out firing, shooting 58% from the field.  That resulted in a 39-32 lead after three.

Dover came back fighting though and closed the gap to 2 points with just over 5 minutes to play.  Then, Sanford went on a 6-0 run that increased the lead to 8 and the Warriors never looked back.  Dover was forced to foul to try to get the ball back, but Sanford made the majority of their free throws to hold on for a 56-45 win.  Sanford's balanced attack included 18 points and 9 rebounds from Trevor Cooney, 17 points from Khallid Hart, and 13 points and 8 boards from Deon Jones.  The Senators were led by Corey Crawford's 18 points and Kendal Williams' 13.  Pieter Prinsloo contributed 6 blocks for Dover.  It was a very exciting game that capped off a very competitive 2009-10 season.
